Mentoring And Coaching

Some young people know what they would like to do, others do not and are unsure how to achieve their goals. It is common to feel overwhelmed in working out what their next steps should be. This could be choosing A-Level subjects or deciding whether to go to university and what to study there.

My experienced, objective and caring viewpoint helps young people discover what inspires them, challenging preconceived ideas about what they are capable of.

Through coaching I help young people overcome blocks, opening the door to opportunities which hadn’t been considered. I ensure that that they know what’s out there for them, and how to get there.

Case study: supporting a year 12 student to make the right university choice

Alex came to me for help in achieving a place at a Russell Group university and selecting the right subject to study.

How I mentor and coach

Finding the inspiration

My experience is that most students can get top grades at GCSE & A-Level when learning is approached the right way.

The first step is an initial chat with the young person, letting them lead the conversation using guided questions, particularly focusing on what they like and what inspires them.

This will inform the suggestions that are discussed at the second meeting, about what they might consider doing. This is often around further education, but could be focused on an ideal job, a particular ambition, or around gap year ideas. Together, we build a plan.

Getting into work or university

I research entrance requirements and how these might be modified for an individual student, and where might offer the right degree course, apprenticeship or job opportunity. I then help them write the best possible personal statement or C.V. as required.

Opening doors

It can often be helpful for an individual to make contact with the department in which they wish to study. Making yourself known, expressing your passion for the course, or asking for advice can really help put a foot in the door. I research and identify the best contacts.

I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to do for university

When I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to do for university I felt absolutely paralysed with indecision and overwhelmed with choices. However, Georgia helped me gain perspective on how much time I had at this early stage to choose a path that I would enjoy and feel fulfilled by.

When I did not have the necessary A-Level subject required by my university for the course, she helped me work out who to contact. It only took one phone conversation and I was able to demonstrate my enthusiasm for the course. This was enough to secure my place at university, where I am now in my third year and thriving.
