The start of my career was based in medicine – I was a Hospital Dental Surgeon specialising in Paediatrics and Oral Surgery in the UK, Hong Kong and Belgium.
Much of my work was centred around coaching undergraduate dental students in surgical skills, and working with younger patients who needed help in overcoming their fear of dental treatment.
Now, as an experienced tutor of GSCE and A-Level Physics, Chemistry and Biology, the skills obtained through my career enable me to find the right approach to learning for each individual student, and in doing so I help build their confidence.
I ensure students are equipped with individually tailored techniques to revise effectively and when sitting exams, to make sure the best possible grades are achieved.
How I tutor
Finding the fun
Creating the right environment for study is crucial. Students will find my home a welcoming, relaxed and bright space in which to learn, and I always make the sessions enjoyable.
An important aspect of helping students absorb the amount of information needed, is making learning fun. This is particularly helpful for the three sciences with the sheer amount of material that they need to know.
I help young people find methods to actively call to mind information, through associations that appeal to them. This ‘active’ approach is very effective in helping students remember what they have learned.
Building confidence
Feeling empowered to go forward with confidence is fundamental for young people.
My approach to tuition is very much about confidence building alongside subject learning. I equip students with skills to help them to study and revise effectively, and approach exams with knowledge of the techniques they need to do as well as they possibly can.
For some students it is helpful for this to start slightly earlier, so I also work with young people aged 13 and 14 years, to help them prepare in advance for their GCSE course.
